Introducing the Storm Drum
I’d had my eye on a storm drum for months.
Every so often I’d check back to see if the storm drum was still available, half hoping it would be, half telling myself I didn’t need another instrument. This week I finally said yes to myself. Today I picked it up from Calm Buddhi and brought it home to the Blüte studio.
I already had a small Remo thunder tube in my collection, and while it’s a lovely little instrument, it doesn’t come anywhere near the depth of this storm drum. There’s a moment that happens the first time you hear it. Your shoulders drop. Your eyes close. It sounds like thunder rolling across a valley, and something in the body recognises it immediately.
What is a storm drum?
A storm drum is an instrument that produces a low, sweeping resonance when played. Its sound builds and swells, moving through a room in waves rather than a single clear tone.
Why it matters for sound therapy
Low frequency sound is known to support the body’s ability to relax. The deep resonance of the storm drum can be felt as much as heard, settling into the chest and belly in a way that higher pitched instruments simply can’t reach. This can help support the nervous system’s shift out of a stressed or hypervigilant state and into a calmer, more grounded one.
For children in particular, the storm drum offers something extra. Many children benefit from sensory experiences they can see and feel, not just listen to. Watching the drum string move and feeling the vibration gives them another way into the experience, especially useful for children who find sitting still and simply listening more challenging.
Where you’ll experience it
I’ll be layering the storm drum with my crystal and Tibetan singing bowls, chimes and gong in upcoming sound & cacao meditation journey sessions, adding a fuller, more grounded texture to the overall soundscape. It will also become part of my children’s sessions, offering a tactile, sensory-friendly way to explore sound and settling.
If you’ve never felt a storm roll through your chest in the best possible way, I’d love for you to join me :)
